Certain Countries Misusing UN Human Rights Mechanisms: Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi condemned an anti-Tehran resolution recently adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), saying that the body is being misused by a few countries.

The passing of the anti-Iran resolution, which resulted in extending of the mandate of the UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, signifies that certain countries are exploiting the UN’s human rights mechanisms, Qasemi said in a statement on Sunday.

“Despite the fact that the resolution was not supported by a significant number of the UNHRC member states, it has been issued solely based on the votes of a specific political bloc and a number of countries in the region that are among the main human rights violators in the world and in the region,” he added.

The resolution is condemned and unacceptable in Iran’s view, the spokesman went on to say.

Tehran believes that the extension of the mandate of the special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran for another year is “unjustifiable and unnecessary”, Qasemi said.

In a meeting in Geneva on Friday, the UNHCR passed the resolution against Iran and extended the special rapporteur’s mandate for another year.

Tehran insists that the appointment of a UN special rapporteur on Iran’s human rights situation is a selective, politically-motivated and unacceptable move.
