Syria Army Recaptures Key Town South of Damascus
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian forces and their allies continued to make gains in their fight against Takfiri militants, managing to retake a key town in southern edges of Damascus neighborhood.
Syrian forces seized full control over al-Hajar al-Aswad city, located just four kilometers south of Damascus, on Saturday evening after inflicting major losses on terrorists, SANA reported.
All terrorists retreated from their fighting positions and fled the battle group, it added.
The army’s engineering units are conducting sweeping operations in the liberated parts of the neighborhood in order to cleanse it from IEDs and landmines planted by terrorists to hinder the Syrian Arab Army’s advance.
The Syrian troops are now moving towards the northern part of al-Hajar al-Aswad adjacent to al-Yarmouk Camp to clear it of terrorists until the liberation of the rest of al-Yarmouk Camp.
In a significant victory early last month, the Syrian army managed to fully liberate the Eastern Ghouta suburb of Damascus, which had long been controlled by militant groups and served as a launch pad for deadly rocket attacks against residents and civilian infrastructure in the capital.
Government forces then went for the districts located south of Damascus, including Yarmouk, which hosts a Palestinian refugee camp.
The camp was held by the Daesh Takfiri terror group as well as militants with the so-called Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, al-Qaeda’s former affiliate in Syria.
However, those terrorists are in the middle of pulling out of Yarmouk together with their families as part of a similar withdrawal deal with the government.
