Iran Parliament to Decide on JCPOA After Monitoring Talks with Europe

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian parliament will decide on the fate of the 2015 nuclear deal after a couple of weeks of negotiations between the Foreign Ministry and Europeans in the wake of the US exit from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the parliament speaker said.

The Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission should constantly monitor the process of negotiations between the Foreign Ministry and Europe within the next couple of weeks to brief the legislature on the results, so that the “final decision could be made” afterwards, Ali Larijani said in an open session of the parliament on Wednesday morning.

It came after US President Donald Trump announced Washington’s withdrawal from the JCPOA, the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

Following the controversial decision, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iran weighs plans to remain in the agreement with the other five parties, namely Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.

Elsewhere in his comments, Ali Larijani said one should not expect a guarantee from the European parties considering their behavior over the past years.

Should Europe, Russia and China succeed in “filling the vacuum” left by the US exit, there could be a chance of saving the JCPOA, otherwise, the Islamic Republic will “make them come to their senses” through its nuclear activities, the speaker stressed.
