Russia Downs 'Unidentified Drone' near Airbase in Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Russia’s military said on Monday it had shot down an unidentified drone that came close to its Syrian air base at Hmeimim, a report said.

“There are neither casualties nor physical damage. Russia’s Hmeimim air base is operating as normal,” RIA news agency said, citing the Russian Defense Ministry.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also confirmed this, saying explosions had been heard near the base and appeared to have come from Russian air defenses confronting an attack.

In January, Russia said that its troops had successfully repelled multiple drone attacks launched by militants on its naval and air bases in Syria.

Russia has been conducting air raids against terrorist outfits in Syria at the Damascus government’s request since September 2015. Moscow has also maintained a naval group in the Mediterranean since the start of its anti-terror campaign in the war-ravaged Arab country.
