UN Official Hails Iranian Nation as Peace-Loving, Civilized
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranians are peace-loving and kind-hearted, features that should be traced to the nation's great history, civilization and culture, said a top UN official on Wednesday after she visited ancient, historical monuments in south of the country on Wednesday.
"Today I learned a lot from being in Persepolis; the fact that people from different nationalities come to visit the site is testimony to the grandeur and glory of Persepolis," Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Helen Elizabeth Clark told Tasnim News Agency, adding that she had learned a great deal about the history of Iran and the world during the visit.
The top UN official also described the Iranian people as hospitable, kind-hearted and friendly, saying such characteristics have their root in the ancient, grand civilization of the nation.
Persepolis, which included palaces, administrative buildings and religious structures, was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BC).
Persepolis was captured and partly destroyed by Alexander III of Macedon in 334 BC.
Persepolis is situated 70 km northeast of the city of Shiraz in Fars Province, in southern Iran. The earliest remains of Persepolis date from around 515 BC. UNESCO declared the citadel of Persepolis a World Heritage Site in 1979.
