Parliament Speaker Congratulates Iranians on Second Ever World Cup Win

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani offered his congratulations to the Iranian people over Team Melli’s second ever World Cup victory in its opener against Morocco in St. Petersburg, Russia.

In a message released on Saturday, Larijani felicitated the Iranian national football team’s second victory in World Cup history after a 2-1 win over the United States at France in 1998.

The “sweet and brilliant” victory of Iran’s brave youths in their first World Cup match concurrently with Eid al-Fitr has brought great happiness and joy to the proud nation of Iran, he said in the massage.

Muslim people of Iran on Friday celebrated Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

The Iranian national football team won its World Cup opener against Morocco on Friday in St. Petersburg, 1-0, thanks to an own goal in added time.

Both teams engaged in a great deal of physical play, and numerous players from both sides hit the turf with injuries throughout.

Though Iran now has three points in Group B, it will have difficult tasks ahead of Spain and Portugal in the days ahead.

Iran will meet Spain in Kazan on June 20 and face Portugal in Saransk five days later.
