Iran to Rise to Challenge of US Sanctions: Velayati

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, described Iran as the dominant power in the region, stressing that the country will overcome the new wave of American sanctions.

In comments at an academic conference in Iran’s northeastern city of Mashhad, Velayati decried the fresh sanctions that the US president has imposed on Iran.

The American officials believe that Iran would surrender under the pressure of sanctions, but it will become obvious soon that the Iranian nation will successfully overcome the challenge of new sanctions, he added.

Velayati then slammed the anti-Iran US sanctions as “a kind of revenge”, stressing that the Iranian government and nation will stand together in confronting the sanctions imposed by a person notorious for breaching commitments in the international arena.

“Today, the region’s top power is undoubtedly Iran, which has been able to cut off the hands of the US and its regional allies from the set (of pro-resistance countries) around us, organized under the name of the axis and atmosphere of resistance and persistence,” the Iranian advisor added.

On May 8, the US president pulled his country out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear agreement achieved in Vienna in 2015 after two years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

After Donald Trump withdrew the US from the deal, his administration moved to re-implement the previous sanctions against Iran.

American authorities say the new sanctions would place “unprecedented economic pressure” on Iran and are seeking to impose sanctions against the countries that do not cut imports of Iranian oil to “zero” by November 4.
