Magnitude 5.7 Quake Rattles Iran’s South

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck Iran’s southern province of Hormozgan on Sunday morning.

The earthquake rattled the coastal province at 9:37 am (local time).

There were no reports of casualties or damages during the first hour after the earthquake.

The temblor has hit hardest the city of Ruydar, some 50 km north of the coast.

The epicenter, with a depth of 8 km, was determined to be at 27.62 degrees north latitude and 54.96 degrees east longitude.

The earthquake was also felt in the neighboring province of Fars.

Hormozgan province lies by the Persian Gulf, surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major fault lines that cover at least 90% of the country. As a result, earthquakes in Iran occur often and are destructive.
