Asian Games: Sohrab Moradi Wins Gold in Weightlifting (+Video)

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian weightlifter Sohrab Moradi claimed a gold medal in the men's 94kg class at the Asian Games on Saturday.

Moradi hoisted 189kg in the competition's opening discipline to better the snatch record set at 188kg in 1999 by Greece's Akakios Kakiasvilis.

Moradi now has a complete set of world records. He already owned the marks for the clean and jerk (233kg) and total weight (417kg) in the men's light heavyweight division.

He went on to lift a new Asian Games record total of 410kg after a clean and jerk of 221kg.

He just failed with an attempt at 234kg which would have bettered his own world records for the clean and jerk and total lifts.

Fares Elbakh took silver for Qatar's first weightlifting medal of the Games, and Thailand's Sumpradit Sarat won the bronze.

Iranian athletes have already won 12 gold medals in the Games.

Saeid Rajabi in +80kg and Mirhashem Hosseini in 63kg have won two gold medals in taekwondo.

Hassan Yazdani (86kg), Alireza Karimi (97kg) and Parviz Hadi (125kg) snatched three gold medals in wrestling freestyle.

Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers Mohammad Ali Geraei in 77kg and Hossein Nouri in 87kg also seized two gold medals.

Wushu practitioners Erfan Ahangarian in the -60kg and Mohsen Mohammadseifi in the -70kg won two gold medals.

Reza Alipour claimed a gold medal in the climbing and women’s kabaddi snatched Iran’s 11th gold medal.

Iranian women’s and men’s kabaddi teams snatches two gold medals.

The 2018 Asian Games, officially known as the 18th Asian Games and also known as Jakarta Palembang 2018, is a pan-Asian multi-sport event scheduled to be held from 18 August to 2 September in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang.

The athletes compete in 465 events across 40 sports and 67 disciplines.
