Sandstorm Sends Air Quality Index to 21 Times Limits in SE Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Harsh weather conditions in southeast Iran, a result of annual 120-day winds, have caused the amount of suspended solids in the air to exceed the maximum permitted levels by up to 21 times.

An official from Iran Meteorological Organization in the southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan told Tasnim on Monday that dust pollution levels in the city of Zabol have jumped to 21 times higher than the permitted levels.

Ali Mollashahi also predicted that the heavy sandstorm would blow over on Monday evening.

Dust particles were driven by 70-kilometers-an-hour winds in Zabol on Monday morning, reducing visibility to below 1,000 meters.

A local health officials said Sunday that around 800 local residents have received medical treatment for respiratory and ocular problems in the wake of the sandstorm.

Authorities have warned residents to avoid staying outdoors.
