Iran’s Bank Melli Rejects Report on Cut-Off of German Telecom Services

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Bank Melli vehemently dismissed as unfounded a report that the bank has seen its German branch disconnected from phone and internet services under pressure of US sanctions.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Public Relations Department of Bank Melli said the Thursday report, in which German business newspaper Handelsblatt said Germany's part state-owned telecom provider Deutsche Telekom had cut off Bank Melli's Hamburg office, is fundamentally false.

Currently, phone and internet services of all branches of Bank Melli are connected, according to the statement.

In the report, Handelsblatt quoted Deutsche Telekom as sending Bank Melli a message, saying, "We have to assume that you can no longer make any payments" for telecom services.

In a Friday tweet, the US Embassy in Berlin posted a link to the Handelsblatt article about Bank Melli, welcoming the report.
