Iran, EU, US Hold another Trilateral Meeting in Geneva

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian foreign minister, US secretary of state and the European Union foreign policy chief once again held a trilateral meeting in the Swiss city of Geneva on Saturday, one day after a similar gathering on Friday night.

According to Michael Mann, the European Union foreign policy chief’s spokesman, the ongoing trilateral meeting has brought together Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Catherine Ashton, who coordinates the talks with Iran on behalf of the powers, in Geneva.

Meanwhile, informed sources have announced that the Iranian foreign minister is also expected to meet his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov after the trilateral meeting now in progress.

The western delegations are holding separate meeting to consult on the details of the last round of talks between Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany). They also are in contact with their capitals in a bid to brief senior officials about the outcomes of negotiations.

Hoping to make an official announcement, US Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday joined his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany. The foreign ministers of Russia and China are now in Geneva.

If some sort of agreement is reached, it would be a breakthrough after a decade of negotiations between Iran and the G5+1 group failed to make any headway.

Kerry, Zarif and EU chief diplomat Catherine Ashton held a long meeting late into the night on Friday. It came to an end around 11:30 pm local time (1030 GMT), with Kerry saying afterward only that it had involved "a lot of work".
