Commander: Iran Police Tough on Economic Corruption
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Police commander highlighted the tough line that his forces have taken with wrongdoers over economic crimes, saying the number of people arrested on major economic corruption charges has reached 60.
Speaking to reporters in the city of Zanjan on Wednesday, Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari said the police have taken appropriate measures over the past months against economic crimes.
Pointing to the police’s effective measures in detection and arrest of economic offenders, the general said the number of people apprehended on major economic corruption charges has reached 60, including a number of key elements.
He also emphasized that the police have no tolerance towards lawbreaking, be it social or economic crimes.
Iranian law enforcement and judicial organizations have ramped up efforts in recent months to tackle economic corruption.
Since late August, the Judiciary has begun to hold public trials of individuals involved in major economic corruption cases.
The names of defendants were made public after Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei permitted Iran’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani to take special measures in order to confront economic corruption and called for “swift and just” legal action against financial crimes.
Earlier, the Leader described “outright and unequivocal” treatment of economic corruption as one of the Judiciary’s major duties, stressing that confronting economic corrupts must be decisive and effective.
The Leader urged the Judiciary to fully inform people about its measures to tackle economic corruption, saying the judicial system should let people realize the authenticity of its anti-corruption measures and turn the threats into opportunities.
