Iranian MPs Urge Rapid Implementation of Agreements with Syria
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian parliamentary delegation visiting Syria called for accelerated efforts to carry out the trade and economic agreements that Tehran and Damascus have signed previously.
The delegation, led by Chairman of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Heshmatollah Falahatpishe, had a meeting with Prime Minister of Syria Imad Khamis in Damascus on Wednesday.
In the gathering, the Iranian lawmaker said although Iran and Syria have signed a series of agreements to broaden economic cooperation, the trade opportunities have not been seized appropriately.
Falahatpishe called on the Syrian government to facilitate the entry of Iranian trade vessels to the port city of Tartus.
He also called for the removal of obstacles to the implementation of bilateral agreements on the exploitation of oil fields and agricultural fields.
For his part, the Syrian prime minister pledged efforts to settle the trade problems originating from the Damascus government, calling on Tehran to push for the removal of obstacles as well and prevent a waste of opportunities.
In December 2018, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Amir Amini dismissed speculation about the Iranian administration’s engagement in construction plans in Syria, saying Iran’s private sector is scheduled to undertake such projects.
Iran wants to use the capabilities of its private sector in Syria’s market, he said, adding that private companies would get involved in both undertaking projects in Syria and supplying the Arab country with building materials.
In September 2017, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York that Iran would assist the Syrian nation in reconstructing their country after the war, in the same way that it contributed to the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Arab state amid the crisis.
