Turkey’s New Envoy Slams Sanctions on Iran, Urges Strong Trade Ties

In a meeting with Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Heshmatollah Falahatpishe in Tehran, the Turkish ambassador expressed dissatisfaction with the imposition of foreign sanctions against Iran.

Hailing the sense of fraternity and friendship between Turkey and Iran, Ors expressed hope that he could take positive steps to enhance the bilateral ties during his tenure.

Pointing to the new path in Iran-Turkey relations given the existing threats and opportunities, the envoy said the two neighbors could promote political, economic and cultural cooperation considering the great determination of the two countries’ officials.

Closer defense and security cooperation between Tehran and Ankara would guarantee security and stability along the border and prevent terrorist attacks, Ors added.

He also stressed the need for closer parliamentary interaction between the two Muslim neighbors.

The Iranian lawmaker, for his part, praised the strong interaction between the two sides in the highly volatile regional and international conditions.

Falahatpishe also emphasized the need for efforts to overcome regional and international obstacles on the path to reaching the target of $30-billion annual trade between Iran and Turkey.

Iran was ranked 19th in the list of top export destinations of Turkey and has been reported as the 7th major source of imports to Turkey in the first five months of 2018.

The two neighbors have set a $30-billion annual trade target, signing several agreements to enhance cooperation in various areas.

In October 2017, Erdogan visited Iran to attend the fourth round of strategic meetings between Iran and Turkey.
