Tight Security in Geneva as Iran, World Powers’ Envoys Gather for Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Swiss government has intensified security measures in Geneva as senior negotiators from Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) convened in the city for new rounds of nuclear talks.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency on the condition of anonymity, a Swiss security official said that tighter security measures have been adopted for this round of talks compared with the past meetings.

The source added that the measures have been done under the order by the government of Switzerland.

Meantime, security measures have been intensified around the Intercontinental Hotel, where senior officials and possibly foreign ministers of G5+1 will be stationed.

High sensitivity of the event has also forced the hosting country to use special security units as well as advanced military choppers to ensure security of the event.

Iran’s team of nuclear negotiators, led by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, arrived in Geneva on Tuesday evening after a stopover in Rome, where Zarif had a meeting with his Italian counterpart.

They are scheduled to hold a fresh round of negotiations with representatives of the six world powers over Tehran’s nuclear program today.

According to Tasnim dispatches, speculation about the possible visit of G5+1 foreign ministers to Geneva has been fueled after the Intercontinental Hotel rooms were reserved for those top diplomats.

Meanwhile, negotiating teams representing Germany, Russia and China arrived in Geneva hours ago to attend the talks.

And earlier, the US team, headed by the country’s lead negotiator Wendy Sherman, had arrived in the Swiss city.
