MP Says Nuclear Deal Dispelled Negative Image of Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A ranking Iranian lawmaker said on Wednesday that the negative image projected from Iran by western propaganda networks has been shattered following the recent nuclear talks, adding that such a deal also helped crack the sanctions regime imposed on Iran.

"The events that followed the recent developments changed the image presented from Iran by the western propaganda networks that the country was after obtaining nuclear weapons; now the world has come to this realization that Iran is not after such weapons," Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the chair of Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said.

Referring to the world powers’ recognition of Iran’s right to enrich uranium, he said that the main pillar of the UN Security Council (anti-Iranian) resolutions was banning the enrichment activities of the Islamic Republic.

“This means the pillars of the (UN) sanctions are shaky today, cracks have appeared in the structure of the sanctions regime and the end of such bans is within sight. This is (the result of) the same heroic flexibility,” he said, referring to an expression used by the Supreme Leader to signify a change in approach to foreign policy issues.

Speaking in an open session of the Iranian parliament on Wednesday morning, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif briefed the legislators on the nuclear deal between Tehran and six major world powers that had been struck after three rounds of intensive talks in Geneva.

“We asserted that approval of the Additional Protocol is not within the purview of the administration and that we cannot even make any pledge in this regard, because the parliament has not given such permission, and the authority (to approve the protocol) lies in the hands of the parliament,” Zarif said.

Iran and the G5+1 countries (also known as the P5+1 in diplomatic shorthand) signed a six-month deal on Tehran’s nuclear program after three rounds of intensive talks in the Swiss city of Geneva on November 24.
