IRGC Commander: Basij Forces Boost Iran’s Power of Deterrence

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) praised the Iranian Basij (volunteer) forces for their prominent role in defending the country against enemies, saying they have made the country powerful enough to deter all potential threats.

The military readiness of Basij forces serves as a major deterrent in the face of threats, IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said in an address to a huge crowd of Basij forces on Saturday.

He also pointed to the major role of the Basij forces during eight years of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s, and noted that the high degree of security in the country is an outstanding achievement of the Sacred Defense --a term used to refer to the Iraqi imposed war on Iran.

“We owe such high security to the presence of devoted Basij forces and mighty armed forces,” the IRGC commander stated.

Pointing to the different tactics used by the enemies of Iran in recent years, Major General Jafari said the adversaries have masterminded “political, cultural and economic threats” to undermine the Islamic Republic.

He, however, noted that the Iranian nation will vigilantly stand against the enemies’ hostile plots, particularly against the unilateral economic sanctions imposed on the country by the western countries.

Earlier on November 17, Commander of the Iranian Basij Force Brigadier General Mohamad Reza Naqdi said his forces have managed to break the enemies’ monopoly in the cyberspace, adding that a whole host of trained bloggers are tasked with defending the values and achievements of the Islamic Revolution in the virtual space.

He stated that between 2004 and 2011, a one-way trend prevailed in the country’s virtual space as it was fully dominated by the adversaries of the Islamic Revolution.

“But now we are witnessing that hundreds of informational centers of Basij and defenders of the (Islamic) revolution act in the cyberspace, and tens of thousands of weblogs, which advocate the achievements of the revolution in an organized and trained manner, are active in the virtual space.”
