Iranian, Swedish FMs Meet in Stockholm

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif discussed a wide range of issues with his Swedish counterpart in Stockholm.

Zarif and Sweden’s Foreign Minister Margot Wallström met on Tuesday for talks on various bilateral, regional and international issues.

In the gathering, the two senior diplomats stressed the need to accelerate the implementation of INSTEX (Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges), a financial mechanism that the European Union has developed to maintain trade with Iran and bypass the US sanctions.

Zarif and Wallström also discussed security in the Persian Gulf region, as well as the situation in Yemen and Afghanistan.

Zarif arrived in Stockholm on Monday night in the second leg of a tour of Scandinavia that took him earlier to Finland, which holds the rotating presidency of the EU.

In a post on his Twitter account, the top Iranian diplomat said he has held “fruitful meetings” with senior Finnish officials to discuss “what EU needs to do to save the JCPOA and protect its interest in freedom of navigation.”

Zarif also said he has also shared ideas with the Finnish authorities on a Regional Dialogue Forum and non-aggression pact with the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) -- an independent Finnish peace broker.

Zarif is going to visit Norway after Sweden.
