TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Tens of thousands of Shiite Muslims in Lebanon’s cities and towns, including Baalbek and Beirut, held mourning ceremonies marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS).

The mourning rituals reached a climax on Ashura, Tuesday (September 10).

Ashura falls on the 10th day of the lunar calendar month of Muharram and commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), one of Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) grandsons, in the battle of Karbala in 680 AD.

Ashura is observed in Iran and Iraq and in other countries with sizeable Shiite communities, including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Lebanon, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Syria.
