Iran Sympathizes with Iraq over Karbala Crush Deaths

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman offered his condolences to Iraq over a tragic incident in the holy city of Karbala in which dozens of people lost their lives in a crush.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, Abbas Mousavi expressed deep regret over the tragic incident in Karbala that occurred on the day of Ashura, when Shiite Muslims flock to the holy city to perform mourning rites in commemoration of Imam Hussein (AS).

The Iranian spokesperson offered condolences to the Iraqi nation and government and expressed the Islamic Republic's sympathy with the families of the victims.

Mousavi also wished highest rewards for the martyrs and speedy recovery for the wounded, according to the Foreign Ministry’s website.

Iraqi officials say at least 31 people were killed and about 100 injured on Tuesday after a walkway collapsed and set off a mass stampede in Karbala. At least 10 among the wounded pilgrims were reportedly in a critical condition.

The deadly rush began when part of a walkway collapsed during a procession, causing mass panic among worshippers.
