Iran’s Deputy Minister, CYRDAP Head Meet in Tehran, Sign MoU

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Hossein Shirzad, Deputy Minister and Head of the Central Organization for Rural Cooperatives of Iran (CORC), met recently with Tevita Taginavulau, the director general of Center on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CYRDAP) in Tehran.

During the meeting, Shirzad explained the duties and functions of the CORC organization and proposed avenues of cooperation between the two organizations.

"Rural and agricultural cooperatives are the last ring of the state administrative chain that provides service to small scale farmers in remote villages. Presently, about 40% of fertilizers and 30% of pesticides are distributed among farmers by cooperatives nationwide. Providing microcredit and marketing assistance to the members are among the cooperative responsibilities toward the Iranian agricultural community that CORC is reinforcing them through adopting appropriate policies, supporting and supervising the rural and agricultural cooperatives,” he said.

IoT (Internet of Things ) is an integral part of CORC's policies to support agro-cooperatives, Shirzad explained.

Tevita Taginavulau, for his part, welcomed the suggestion proposed by the Iranian official.

The two sides also signed an initial agreement to step up their mutual cooperation on rural and agricultural development.

CIRDAP is a regional, intergovernmental and autonomous organization. It was established on 6 July 1979 at the initiative of the countries of the Asia-Pacific region and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations with support from several other UN bodies and donors.

The member-countries are Afghanistan, Bangladesh (Host State), Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Lao, PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

It plays a supplementary and reinforcing role in supporting and furthering the effectiveness of integrated rural development programs in Asia and the Pacific.
