Deputy FM to Brief Iran MPs on UK Envoy’s Presence in Anti-Gov’t Rally

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi is slated to attend a meeting of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission to brief the lawmakers on the illegal presence of the UK ambassador to Iran in an anti-government rally.

The spokesman for the commission, Hossein Naqavi Hosseini, told Tasnim that Araqchi is planned to take part in a meeting of the commission and talk about the recent move by British Ambassador to Tehran Rob Macaire to attend an anti-government rally in Tehran.

Some representatives of the Law Enforcement Force will also participate in the parliamentary meeting, according to the spokesman.

Iranian Police released footage that shows Macaire taking part in an illegal gathering in the capital last Saturday.

Macaire was arrested after he tried to “provoke and organize” an anti-government gathering held in front of Amir Kabir University in Tehran, according to an informed security source.

“The British ambassador was detained in accordance with the law for being illegally present (in the protest) in violation of diplomatic norms and while he was acting against the country’s security,” the source said Sunday.

The British diplomat was handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then was released.
