Some French Institutes Worse than US When It Comes to Sanctions: Iran
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Embassy in Paris hit back at a French lawmaker for her remarks against the Islamic Republic and said certain French institutes act worse than the US when it comes to the anti-Tehran sanctions.
In a post on its Twitter account on Friday, the Iranian embassy said Chairman of France-Iran Parliamentary Friendship Group Anne Genetet, in a tweet, expressed hope for the release of Fariba Adelkhah and Roland Marchal who are detained in Iran on security charges.
Genetet also called on the Iranian government to found bilateral relations on trust, according to the embassy.
In response, the Iranian embassy said, trust is not “one-sided”, adding that some French institutions exert the most severe pressures on Iran even in the medicine sector, which are worse than the US’ pressures.
The two countries’ energy and time should not be wasted on issues caused by third countries in the long-term, the embassy stated.
The remarks come against the backdrop of increased tensions between Iran and the US with Washington imposing new sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
The US has ratcheted up pressure on Iran since May 2018 after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Since then, the administration of US President Donald Trump is trying to reduce Iran’s oil exports to “zero,” and has sent an aircraft carrier strike group, a bomber squad, an amphibious assault ship, and a Patriot missile battery to the Middle East to try to stack up pressure on Tehran.
Iranian officials, however, have dismissed such moves as psychological warfare, saying the country has its own ways of circumventing the American bans.
