Iran’s President Calls for Efforts to Make World "Better Place"
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, in a message to congratulate the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ, called on the world nations to put efforts into building a better world replete with peace and welfare, free from violence and extremism.
“On the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ and ahead of the start of the new Christian year (2014), I call on the world to unite along the path to (build) a better world, and I hope that 2014 would bring further freedom, welfare, fortitude, convergence, peace and happiness for the whole people of the world,” Rouhani said in a message on Wednesday, December 25.
The president also paid tribute to Jesus Christ, whom he described as messenger of “liberty, equality and fraternity”, and noted that the entire divine religions have expressed opposition to violence in the world.
He further elaborated on the “practical steps” the Islamic Republic has taken for materialization of global peace, saying that Iran's proposal for a World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) was a recent bid to promote peaceful coexistence all over the globe.
The UN General Assembly on December 18 approved the proposal presented by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani for a World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE).
Wave Act asks the United Nations member states to unite against extremism, violence and sectarian conflicts in all their forms.
The resolution, which received overwhelming approval in the global body, also necessitates “appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace and to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character.”
