Tehran, Moscow Stress Implementation of Geneva Nuclear Deal
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Deputies foreign minister of Iran and Russia emphasized the necessity for the immediate implementation of a landmark nuclear accord between Iran and the six world powers, reached in Geneva last November.
In a Tuesday telephone conversation, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stressed the need for completion of the mechanisms for putting into practice the Geneva nuclear deal as soon as possible.
They also underlined that Iran and Russia should stay in close contact concerning Tehran’s nuclear program.
The telephone conversation came ahead of a forthcoming meeting between Araqchi and EU Deputy Foreign Policy Chief Helga Schmid.
The two nuclear negotiators are scheduled to hold a meeting in the Swiss city of Geneva on January 9-10 in order to decide on an exact date for putting into practice the nuclear deal.
The forthcoming meeting is aimed at resolving the issues remained unresolved during earlier expert-level talks between Iran and the Group 5+1 (the US, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany).
Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as P5+1 or E3+3) on November 24 signed a six-month deal on Tehran’s nuclear program based on which the world powers agreed to suspend some non-essential sanctions and to impose no new nuclear-related bans in return for Tehran's decision to freeze parts of its nuclear activities and to allow more inspection of its nuclear facilities.
The both sides have prepared themselves to start carrying out the November nuclear accord from January 20, however, a precise date will be set after Araqchi and Schmid reach common ground on the remaining issues.
