Iraq in Strongest State: Velayati

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iraq is currently in its strongest position, Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on international affairs said.

In a meeting with former Iraqi prime minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi in Tehran, Velayati said Iraq, Iran and the other members of the axis of resistance need to strengthen their unity.

Hailing the election of a new president and prime minister in Iraq, the Iranian official said the success that has been achieved with the unity and rapport among all Iraqi people has prepared the ground for the Arab country to play an influential role as one of the most important states in the region as well as the Islamic and Arab world.

Reaffirming the Islamic Republic of Iran’s support for the Iraqi nation, Velayati warned against the plots hatched by the enemies, particularly the US, and added, “The Americans must leave the region, as they are constantly showing hostility and making plots with the purpose of weakening and partitioning the Muslim countries and creating division within the Islamic Ummah.”

In a telephone conversation with former Iraqi prime minister in May, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi reiterated Tehran’s backing for the unity and integrity of Iraq, hoping for the formation of a strong government in the neighboring state.

On October 13, the Iraqi Parliament elected Kurdish politician Abdul Latif Rashid as the country’s new president, paving the way for the formation of a new government and ending a year of deadlock.

After his election by parliament, Rashid immediately named Mohammed Shia al-Sudani as Iraq’s prime minister-designate.
