28 Afghan Militants Killed in Latest Operations: Gov't
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Twenty-eight Taliban militants were killed in Afghanistan since early Saturday, the country's Interior Ministry said on Sunday.
"In past 24 hours, Afghan National Police conducted several anti-terrorism joint operations with army and National Directorate for Security (NDS) to clean some of the areas from terrorists and enemies of peace and stability of Afghanistan. As a result, 28 armed Taliban members were killed, seven wounded and seven others were arrested by Afghan National Security Forces," the ministry said in a statement.
The operations were carried out in Kunar, Zabul, Logar and Helmand provinces, the statement said, adding that the security forces also confiscated light and heavy rounds ammunition and improvised explosive devices.
In addition, up to 13 militants were killed in an ongoing operation in Bati Kot district of eastern Nangarhar province, a provincial security official told Xinhua earlier Sunday, Xinhua reported.
The army and police have stepped up efforts to clear the militants across Afghanistan as the country is preparing for the presidential and provincial council elections slated for April 5 this year.
The Taliban has yet to make comments.
