Iran: Foreign Intervention to Exacerbate Ukraine Crisis
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian foreign ministry spokeswoman cautioned that foreign intervention in Ukraine’s internal developments could aggravate the situation in that country, and expressed the hope that the Ukrainian government and opposition would find a solution to the current crisis.
On Thursday, Marziyeh Afkham voiced concern about the escalating tension between the Ukrainian government and the opposition, and stressed, “The foreign intervention in Ukraine’s upheavals could deepen the differences and aggravate the situation.”
She also deplored the death of a number of Ukrainians during the recent clashes in the east European country, and added, “We hope that the national reconciliation and understanding between the government and the opposition would be gained as soon as possible, and that the ongoing crisis would come to an end.”
Ukraine has witnessed anti-government protests since November, after President Viktor Yanukovich refrained from signing a deal, known as the Association Agreement, with the European Union following pressure from Russia.
Meanwhile, the European Union on Wednesday weighed imposing targeted sanctions on Ukraine as the clashes between the police and protesters have raged in that country.
The clashes continued despite the announcement of a truce between President Viktor Yanukovych and the main opposition leaders a day earlier.
According to the country’s Health Ministry, at least 75 people, including police officers, have died since the latest round of violence broke out on Tuesday.
