Iranian Commander Warns Riyadh of Muslims' Strong Reaction to Nimr’s Death Penalty

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Should Riyadh execute senior Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, Muslims around the world will make the life a hell for the Al Saud, the ruling family in Saudi Arabia, commander of the Iranian Basij (volunteer) Force Brigadier General Mohamad Reza Naqdi said.

“If the Al Saud commits such crime, the move will not remain unanswered and… Muslims will make this world a hell for them,” the commander said on Saturday in reaction to the reports that the Specialized Criminal Court in the Saudi capital Riyadh has sentenced Nimr to death.

The furious reaction by the Iranian commander came after Sheikh Nimr’s family reported on Wednesday that a Saudi judge has found him guilty of “sedition” and sentenced him to death.

Nimr, who is in his 50s, had been on trial since March 2013. He was found guilty of “disobeying” the kingdom's rulers, his brother said.

Nimr's family accused the court of ignoring the sheik's “peaceful and non-violent approach,” saying the case had caused “social and political discontent.”
