TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A representative of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Iran said the Islamic Republic has hosted the largest refugee population in the world during the past 3 decades, and hailed Tehran for offering considerable humanitarian aid.

“The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has effectively implemented its undertakings in coordinating humanitarian contributions in various emergency cases,” Sivanka Dhanapala said in a message to the 1st International Crisis Management Conference in Favor of Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Orumiyeh on Thursday.

“The international body (UNHCR) … always supports and appreciates Islamic Republic of Iran’s measures in emergency cases,” the UN representative reiterated, adding that Iran enjoys considerable experiences in different emergency conditions.

The envoy said Iran also enjoys advanced emergency planning system, and stated that Tehran can share its experiences to empower humanitarian agencies to assist governments in emergency cases.

The 1st International Crisis Management Conference in Favor of Refugees and Asylum Seekers was co-sponsored by the Iranian Ministry of Interior and the UNHCR in the northwestern Iranian city of Orumiyeh.

Iran is one of the global record-holders in hosting millions of refugees from neighboring countries for more than three decades, only 860,000 of whom are registered.
