Bangladesh Police Cordon Off Ex-PM's Office, Party Headquarters

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Bangladesh's ex-prime minister Khaleda Zia remained cordoned off inside her office in capital Dhaka's Gushan diplomatic enclave since last night.

A large number of police personnel have been deployed outside her office. Police did not allow any one to enter or exit from the office.

At least two large police trucks were deployed at each end of the roads to cut off the route to Khaleda's office.

Khaleda Zia, also chairperson of Bangladesh Nationalist Party ( BNP), was scheduled to address a rally on Monday.

Police have also locked down the BNP's headquarters after searching it.

Detectives arrested BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at the party headquarters during the search, Xinhua reported.

"Our office was cordoned off since last night," said Abdus Satter Patwary, a leader of BNP's student wing.

A Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesman was not available for comment.

Tensions are running high across Bangladesh as the country's political situation is once again heating up centering on the first anniversary of Jan. 5 parliamentary elections.
