District Police Chief, Judge Killed in Afghanistan
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Armed gunmen, presumably Taliban militants, shot dead a district police chief in the northern Saripul province on Saturday, while a judge was killed in a similar attack in the eastern Nangarhar province, officials said.
"A group of armed men opened fire and killed Hakim Beg, the police chief of Sangcharak district, at around 02:00 p.m. local time today," Governor of the Saripul province Abdul Jabbar Haqben told Xinhua.
However, he didn't give more details.
Local witnesses said the district police chief was traveling to the provincial capital of Saripul, 350 km north of Kabul, when a group of Taliban militants ambushed him. Two other people were wounded during the attack, according to the locals.
An anti-corruption judge was gunned down in another attack in Nangarhar province.
"Unidentified men riding a motorbike opened fire and killed judge Abdul Matin while he was going to his office this morning," provincial governor's spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai told reporters.
Matin is the second judge who has been killed in Nangarhar province over the past four days.
On Wednesday, a judge was killed and two of his children injured in Nangarhar's provincial capital of Jalalabad, 120 km east of Kabul, Xinhua reported.
