Speaker: Final Iran Nuclear Deal Needs Realism
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s parliament speaker said a final agreement on Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program is within reach provided that the negotiating parties exercise realism and refrain from “political bargaining”.
“Reaching a final agreement hinges on realism of the sides negotiating with Iran, recognition of (Iran’s) right to peaceful use of nuclear energy and refraining from political and bargain-style haggling,” Ali Larijani said in a Sunday meeting with Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides in Tehran.
The Cypriot diplomat, for his part, said there is a great sense of optimism in the European Union about an ultimate nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers.
Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) are now in nuclear talks with the aim of hammering out a final agreement to end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.
The two sides wrapped up a week of intensive nuclear talks in Vienna in November 2014 without reaching a long-awaited deal they were supposed to hammer out by the self-imposed November 24 deadline.
They, however, decided to extend the deadline for more seven months in the hope of signing the long-awaited deal.
Diplomatic negotiations are scheduled to resume in the Swiss city of Geneva later this week.
