Portugal Supports Negotiated Solution to Iran's Nuclear Issue: FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Portuguese Foreign Minister and Deputy PM Rui Machete on Monday voiced his country’s support for finding a negotiated solution to Iran’s nuclear issue.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) are in talks to hammer out a final agreement to end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

“We totally encourage the talks started with Iran, and support a negotiated solution (to Iran's nuclear issue) that can allay international community’s concerns and at the same time acknowledge Iran’s rights to adopt its (nuclear) policies,” the visiting minister said, speaking at University of Tehran's Faculty of World Studies.

Machete went on to say that Lisbon acknowledges Tehran’s right to enrich uranium.

The European minister earlier held separate meetings with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to discuss latest development in bilateral ties.
