Zarif: Expanding Ties with Neighbors Iran's Top Priority

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister said expansion of ties with neighboring countries tops the agenda of Tehran’s foreign policy.

Mohammad Javad Zarif made the comments on Monday upon arrival at the international airport in the Armenian capital of Yerevan.

Zarif said his visit to the former Soviet Union republic comes as part of efforts to expand bilateral cooperation between Tehran and Yerevan.

“Armenia is one the neighbors of the Islamic Republic of Iran which lies in a very sensitive region,” said the Iranian foreign minister, reiterating that the region needs the establishment of peace and stability on the basis of international regulations.

The top Iranian diplomat said during his stay in Armenia, he will meet with the country’s senior officials including prime minister, president and foreign minister.

Iran and Armenia have always enjoyed amicable relations in a whole host of fields.

The 12th session of Iran-Armenia joint economic commission was also held in Tehran in mid-December with a number of the two countries’ ministers and their deputies in attendance.

Back in late October, Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan made a visit to Tehran and discussed ways to deepen relations between the two neighboring countries in various spheres, including economy, agriculture and politics.
