Detente with West Top on Iran's Agenda: Envoy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian ambassador to Russia underlined the importance of relations between the Islamic Republic and some Western countries, saying that resolving tensions between the two sides are among Tehran’s foreign policies.

“The effectiveness of our diplomacy in the future developments is clear,” Mehdi Sanaei said, addressing the 2nd Conference on 'the International System, Regional Developments and the Foreign Policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran' held in Tehran on Monday.

“De-escalation of tensions in relations and interaction with the West as well as the expansion of ties with China and Russia constitute the Islamic Republic of Iran’s foreign policy,” he stated.

He further pointed to Tehran-Moscow relations, saying that President Hassan Rouhani’s administration attaches great significance to the ties.

He also expressed the hope that the close cooperation between Tehran and Moscow would continue in the future.

Late in 2014, Iran and Russia agreed to strengthen trade ties in 2015 by simplifying the exchange of their national currencies, diplomats from the two countries said.

Back in September, President Rouhani made a two-day trip to Russia and participated in the 4th summit of the Caspian Sea littoral states in Russia’s southern city of Astrakhan.

During the visit, Rouhani said that the common interests of Iran and Russia have strengthened the two countries' cooperation.
