Iran Nuclear Talks in Montreux Constructive, Progress Achieved: EU
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The European Union hinted at progress in the latest round of nuclear talks between Iran and six world powers, held in the Swiss city of Montreux, describing the negotiations as constructive.
"The meetings were constructive and useful. Some progress was made and a better understanding on some of the issues emerged," the EU External Action Service said in a statement on Thursday.
According to the statement, Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) will "continue to work on the remaining gaps" and plan to meet again "very soon".
The statement came after a round of diplomatic meetings in Montreux between senior diplomats from Iran and the US, followed by one-day talks between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3).
Iran and the six powers are in talks to hammer out a final agreement to end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
Earlier, an official close to the team of Iranian negotiators said the next round of diplomatic negotiations over Iran’s peaceful nuclear program will be held from March 15 to 20.
On Thursday, Iran’s deputy foreign minister and senior negotiator, Abbas Araqchi, said Iran and the world powers are trying their best to reach a sort of “understanding” by the end of the month, noting that “major issues” still remain to be resolved.
