Two Units of Iran’s Biggest Environmental Project Come on Stream
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran on Saturday inaugurated two units of a wastewater treatment plant in southern Tehran, which is part of the country’s biggest ever environmental project.
In a special ceremony in Shahr-e-Rey, south of Tehran, attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, the fifth and sixth units of the wastewater treatment plant came into operation.
The wastewater treatment plant which is part of a bigger project named “Tehran Sewerage Project” provides water services to a population of over one million people and produces 16,000 megawatts of electricity per year.
Tehran Sewerage Project covers a population of over 11 million people living in Tehran Province.
Speaking during the ceremony, President Rouhani hailed the inauguration of the two units as “an important and great measure”, saying that the wastewater treatment plant would provide services for 55 percent of the population of Tehran.
Rouhani also made assurances that his administration is taking necessary measures to prevent water scarcity in the capital despite drought in the country.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency earlier last month, Iranian Deputy Energy Minister Sattar Mahmoudi said the country has become self-sufficient in implementing projects on water purification plants and sewage treatment facilities.
He said the Iranian companies are involved in water and sewage treatment projects in countries across the Middle East and Africa.
Mahmoudi noted that Iran’s engineering service for foreign countries is not confined to setting up treatment facilities, but Iran’s water industry is now active in a total of 40 countries around the world.
