Senators’ Letter Proved US Untrustworthy: Iran Speaker
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s parliament speaker on Sunday slammed as “inappropriate” a recent letter the US Republican senators wrote in defiance of a possible final deal on Tehran’s nuclear energy program, saying that such action better revealed the US "untrustworthy nature" on the international scene.
Addressing a Sunday session of the parliament, Ali Larijani said the letter a number of US Republican senators sent to Iran caused a severe damage to Washington’s image and legal position in the world.
He made the comments in response to an open letter that a group of 47 Republican senators wrote to the Iranian government on March 9, warning that any nuclear deal Iran signs with US President Barack Obama's administration won’t last after Obama leaves office.
Larijani said the letter clearly proved US untrustworthy and also prompted the Iranian team of nuclear negotiators to think about making any US “deceitful” action costly.
He further noted that Iran does not merely adopts political stances toward the letter, but exercises prudence to thwart any plot in the course of talks on a nuclear deal.
In relevant comments on Thursday, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said the letter reveals the "collapse of US political ethics."
Obama also said he was “embarrassed” for the senators who sent the letter to Iranian leaders.
Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) are in talks to hammer out a final agreement to end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.
