Protesters Rally against Prisoner Torture in Bahrain

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – People took to the streets of Bahrain on Wednesday night to condemn the Al Khalifa regime's torture of political prisoners.

The anti-regime protesters, peacefully marching in different regions of the country, slammed the torture of political prisoners and expressed solidarity with those jailed for their political views.

The demonstrators also renewed calls for the unconditional release of prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Ali Salman, the secretary general of Bahrain's main opposition bloc al-Wefaq National Islamic Society.

Salman was arrested late last year on charges of seeking regime change and collaborating with foreign powers.

Al-Wefaq has recently raised alarm over the plight of political inmates kept in Bahrain's notorious Jaw prison.

Political prisoners are said to be subject to intimidation, torture, and group punishment in the prison.

The United Nations and the Western countries have, however, adopted a nonchalant approach toward human rights violations in Bahrain.

Since mid-February 2011, thousands of anti-regime protesters have held numerous demonstrations on the streets of the tiny Persian Gulf country. Protesters initially called for political reforms and a constitutional monarchy. However, the demand later changed to an outright call for the ouster of the Al Khalifa family following its brutal crackdown on popular protests.
