Russian FM to Rejoin Iran Talks, Predicts Good Chance of Deal

LAUSANNE (Tasnim) – Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will return to Lausanne on Tuesday to join the talks on Iran’s nuclear program, his deputy said, while the Russian minister himself predicted a high chance of a lasting nuclear accord.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov announced on Tuesday that Lavrov will come back to Lausanne on Tuesday evening.

Lavrov left Switzerland for Moscow on Monday for a meeting with a delegation from Vanuatu, a small Pacific nation recently devastated by a cyclone.

Meanwhile, RT quoted Lavrov as saying at a press conference in Moscow that the ongoing marathon talks on Iran’s nuclear program have a high chance of producing a deal.

The chances of a breakthrough in the talks are high, but success is not guaranteed, Lavrov stressed.

“We have an opportunity to realize our chances if no party to the negotiations tries to raise the stakes at the last moment to get something extra instead of keeping a balance of interests,” he added.

Moreover, in relevant upbeat comments on Tuesday, Ryabkov told reporters, “I hope you will be positively surprised.”

Ranking diplomats from Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) launched a new round of negotiations on Thursday with the aim of reaching a lasting nuclear deal ahead of a March 31 deadline.

The parties have been working to agree on a preliminary framework accord by the end of March, to be followed by a comprehensive deal by June 30 that includes all technical details.
