Iran’s President Highlights Special Care for Environment

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani underlined that his administration attaches great importance to the protection of the environment.

The administration has high regard for the environment and insists on the protection of natural resources and wildlife habitats, President Rouhani said Sunday in an address to a ceremony marking Environment week.

He said the administration has supported initiatives to counter the factors that are disruptive to the environment, such as by offering cleaner fuels and producing vehicles that conform to environmental standards.

The president also voiced determination to increase gas extraction from the fields that Iran shares with its neighbors, saying the country is capable of producing more gas as an alternative for mazut, a highly polluting fuel for industrial centers and power plants.

Earlier in March, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei had called for the formulation of Iran’s national document on environment, and urged national efforts to protect the environment.

"Formulating a national document on environment and annexed environmental documents for all constructional, industrial, trade and refinery projects, reviewing the law to criminalize damage to the environment, and strengthening indiscriminate supervision are among the most important ways to protect the environment and confront profiteers and lawbreakers," Ayatollah Khamenei said on March 8.

Imam Khamenei also underlined that the issue of environment is not within the purview of a specific administration, individual or political current, but is a “national subject” that requires joint efforts.

The Supreme Leader described the environmental challenges as a worldwide problem that cause long-term effects.

"The experiences of different countries show that many environmental problems can be prevented and have solutions," Ayatollah Khamenei added.
