Iranian Official Urges Regional Cooperation to End Crises
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian warned against the grave situation in Yemen and Syria, saying that regional countries should work together to resolve the crises in the Middle East.
Speaking in a meeting with the visiting Swiss State Secretary Yves Rossier in Tehran, Amir Abdollahian underscored the necessity for the resolution of the ongoing crises in Syria and Yemen through dialogue among all domestic sides, saying that people in these two countries have the right to choose their own destiny.
He called for attention to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Yemen, and pointed to the need for expediting the dispatch of humanitarian aid, cessation of Saudi attacks, and reinforcement of national dialogue.
The Iranian diplomat also slammed measures by certain countries leading to the spread of terrorism in the region.
Pressures applied by some countries to overthrow the legitimate government of Syria and their financial and military supports for terrorist groups were dangerous precedents that led to the reinforcement of terrorist groups and turned to a threat to regional countries as well as the international community, he explained.
Amir Abdollahian also expressed the hope for the formation of regional cooperation required for "responsible and committed" fight against terrorism and extremism in Syria and Iraq.
Rossier, for his part, described as positive the cooperation between Tehran, Bern, and the United Nations in improving the humanitarian situation in Syria, and called for the continuation of collaborations.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri (extremist) terrorists from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.
Yemen has also been struck by a Saudi-led aggression that has killed hundreds of civilians since they started their air strikes on March 26.
