Russian Sanctions to Have Negative Impacts on Turkey’s Economy: Analyst

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A prominent Lebanese analyst said Turkey is facing a difficult situation following Moscow’s economic sanctions against the country after it downed a Russian fighter jet in Syria.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Lebanese journalist and analyst Ghaleb Kandil said the downing of the Russian Su-24 fighter jet over Syrian airspace occurred based on the Turkish government’s decision.

However, he added, Moscow has refrained from engaging in direct military confrontation with Ankara so far but imposed some economic embargoes against it instead.

“The moves that Moscow has taken against Ankara in the economic and tourism areas will have very negative impacts on Turkey’s economy,” the Lebanese analyst stressed.

Tensions between Russia and Turkey have been on the rise since November 24, when Turkey shot down the Russian fighter jet that Ankara says had entered Turkish airspace, a claim strongly rejected by Moscow.

Russia has been carrying out airstrikes against terrorist groups in Syria since September 30, upon a request from the Syrian government.
