Iran’s Negotiator Optimistic about Closure of PMD Case
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian foreign ministry official described Monday meeting of the joint commission between Iran and six world powers as “good”, and expressed optimism about the closure of so-called PMD case of Tehran nuclear energy program.
Speaking to reporters after conclusion of two rounds of talks between Iranian delegation and diplomats from the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) held in Vienna, Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi said very good consultations were held in positive atmosphere between the two sides.
He said the negotiating parties reviewed issues pertaining to the implementation of the nuclear agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
“One of the major issues was (draft text of) a resolution which the (IAEA) Board of Governors should adopt and conclude the consideration of the so-called PMD (possible military dimensions) issue.”
“That was a major issue,” Araqchi underscored.
He further said Iran believes that the recent IAEA assessment by the agency’s Director General Yukiya Amano was a strong document proving the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program in the past decade.
“We believe that based on this final assessment, the Board of Governors should close the so-called PMD case and pave the way for a new era of cooperation between Iran and the agency," Araqchi added.
The IAEA’s Board of Governors is set to hold a meeting on December 15 to make a final decision on Iran’s nuclear case. Tehran has already underlined that it will implement a nuclear agreement signed with six world powers in July once the file is completely closed.
