Iran Not to Implement JCPOA If PMD Case Remains Open: Spokesman
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Government Spokesman Mohammad Baqer Nobakht stressed that the country would implement a recent nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers only if Iran’s so-called PMD (possible military dimension) case is closed in an upcoming IAEA Board of Governors meeting.
“If the PMD case is not closed on December 15, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution has clarified Islamic Republic of Iran’s position,” Nobakht said in a press conference held Tuesday here in Tehran.
“In that case (PMD case is not closed), we will not implement the JCPOA,” he added, referring to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the text of the nuclear deal finalized by Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany) on July 14.
The Group 5+1 submitted a draft resolution to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors, which is expected to close the PMD case on December 15.
According to the draft resolution published on Tuesday, the Board's consideration of Iran’s PMD will be closed since all the activities in the Road-map for the clarification of past and present outstanding issues regarding Iran's nuclear program have been implemented in accordance with the agreed schedule.
As part of a Road-map signed between Iran and the IAEA in July, the agency was required to finish its investigations about Iran’s nuclear activities and submit a report to the Board of Governors by December 15. The IAEA chief submitted his report on Wednesday.
The Road-map was signed on the same day that Tehran and the Group 5+1 (also known as E3+3 and P5+1) reached a conclusion on a lasting nuclear agreement, known as the JCPOA.
The IAEA has been given the role of verifying Iran’s commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The agreement was officially adopted on October 18, and is going to take effect within the next few weeks.
