Trump Least-Liked US Presidential Candidate: Poll

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is by far the least-liked by American voters compared to his White House rivals, a possible consequence of his Islamophobic comments, a new poll shows.

The poll released Thursday by Gallup, showed that 91 percent of US voters were familiar with Trump, but only 32 percent of them had a favorable opinion about Trump, compared to 59 percent who had an unfavorable opinion.

This overwhelming gap yielded a negative net favorability rating for the leading GOP candidate at minus 27 percent.

The poll also showed that Hillary Clinton, the Democratic Party’s leading candidate, had a 45 percent favorability score, compared to 49 percent unfavorable rating.

Trump’s surging unpopularity among American voters can be attributed to his recent rampage of anti-Muslim rhetoric.

He ignited a political firestorm on Monday by proposing a “total and complete” ban on all Muslims entering the US.

Trump’s outrageous demand has been roundly condemned by nearly all presidential candidates, both Republican and Democrat, as well as the White House.

President Barack Obama took an indirect jab at Trump on Wednesday, saying Muslim refugees entering the country are “part of what makes America great,” referring to trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”

The White House also blasted Trump's proposal calling for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States."

The proposed ban even drew criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, forcing Trump to postpone his trip to the occupied lands, Press TV reported.

The billionaire businessman has also called for special IDs and a national database to track Muslims across the US.
