Iran to Push Ahead with Making Conventional Arms: DM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan underlined on Wednesday that there will be no slowdown in the country’s plans to design and manufacture conventional weapons.

Addressing an academic conference in Tehran, the defense minister stressed that Iran will carry out military projects according to its “national interests”, and that nobody, anywhere in the world, can tell Iran what to do.

“We will design, produce and bring into operation any kind of conventional weapons and gear (necessary) to defend our country,” Dehqan stated.

He also made it clear that a July nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers, and a subsequent UN Security Council resolution endorsing the accord, will not stop Iran from continuing to do research and development activities in the military sphere and manufacture weapons.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14 reached a conclusion on a 159-page nuclear agreement that would terminate all sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear energy program after coming into force.

Afterwards, the 15-memebr United Nations Security Council passed a resolution that endorsed the JCPOA.

Resolution 2231 calls upon Iran “not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons.”

Iran maintains that none of its missiles have been designed to be capable of carrying nuclear warheads, because nuclear weapons have basically no place in Iran’s defense doctrine.

Back in August, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi said the country’s missile tests will be carried out on schedule, according to plans endorsed by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.
