Iran Supports Syria Based on Religious, Human Duty: Larijani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Speaker of Iran’s Parliament Ali Larijani said that Tehran considers it a religious and human responsibility to assist Syria in its ongoing fight against terrorism and extremism.

“Iran and Syria, as two friendly and brotherly countries, have in recent years enjoyed stable relations that have roots in the numerous commonalities,” Larijani said in a meeting with the visiting Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem in Tehran.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, based on its religious, human, and ethical duties, has always supported the Syrian people against the crimes of terrorist and extremist groups,” he added.

Larijani also expressed the hope that the Syrian nation would manage to cleanse larger swaths of its territory of the Takfiri terrorists.

Muallem, for his part, deplored certain regional countries for hatching plots to overthrow the Syrian government with the aim of disintegrating the Arab country using terrorist groups.

He also praised Tehran for standing by the Syrian nation and supporting their resistance in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with ISIL Takfiri terrorists currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.

In the past four years, more than 200,000 people have died in Syria -overwhelmingly civilians– and around 4 million Syrian people are now refugees in other countries. Another 7.6 million are displaced inside Syria.
